How is an Art Décor Portrait different from
a regular photograph portrait? With a regular photograph, a photographer shoots a photo of the subject
in a studio or outdoor setting. The people are usually looking at the camera & smiling. It is printed in color
or sepia tone on a photographic paper or canvas. It is usually framed (or canvas wrapped) in a conventional
rectangle format. With an Art Decor Portrait we design the piece especially for the space that it will be shown in.
This design process explores the individual personality and style of the subject to “capture their spirit” &
“tell their story”. We prefer to use archival art papers (though we may also use canvas) that can be collaged,
embellished with pastels, watercolor, etc. The subject is usually not “looking at a camera” or smiling, because it
is telling a story instead of just capturing a moment in time. Though we start with a photo (or combination of
photos) – what’s in the original photo is usually significantly changed for the final piece. The finished piece can
be any shape and may not need to be framed, or have a hand made fabric mat.
How do you design it to go with my
décor?
Our interior decorator, Meshell Lane, visits your home (office, etc.) to see and discuss your style, colors &
décor. A piece of art can often tie a whole décor together by incorporating elements and color from the decor.
Measurements are taken to insure that the piece will be the perfect size & shape and have the correct
proportion and placement. Groupings, the incorporation of fabric, designs, etc., make it a unique custom designed
piece of art expressly for your space.
Can you use a photograph that I already
have or use my photographer? In most cases, unless your existing photo is of very poor quality, yes! We
may have to get permission (that may involve a fee to the original photographer) if the photo was taken by a
professional. We have been very successful with enlarging small snapshots to use for larger pieces, restoring
damaged photos and combining photos. Although have a photographer Tim Gillespie on our team, we are more than
willing to work with other photographers to take new photos if you wish.
I don’t usually take a good photo; can you
make me look good? This is our favorite thing to do – because it’s all about you! We have a
questionnaire that we go through with our subjects to determine what they like or don’t like about their face or
figure. Our artist, Sea Miller, can enhance your best or favorite features, minimize any faults that you think you
might have, make you slimmer, change the color of your eyes or even create the “fantasy” you!
When people experience or know you, they are not dwelling on (& may not even notice) - a mole, uneven teeth, a
crooked nose, etc., it’s your spirit that shows through. So why have these things stick out on a picture that is
frozen in time – it’s not really who you are inside!
How do you “capture my spirit” & “tell
my story”?
We take time, with a well-designed, personal interview, to get to know the real you. Everyone has a special
interest, memory, hobby or obsession that is part of who they are. This is something that is then integrated into
your art piece because you are part of the process that creates it.
If it is to be an art piece for a couple to celebrate their love for each other, we may incorporate tickets (or
facsimile) from the concert where they met or lines from a poem or letter that was exchanged. If you are into
dragons, motorcycles or vintage airplanes, this can be expressed in your piece subtly or obviously – it’s up to
you! Each piece is as unique as the subject(s) being portrayed.
How long does it take?
Six weeks is the average time, but it may be more or less depending on the complexity of the piece, if we have to
special order embellishments, fabric, frames, etc., and our workflow situation at the time. We can keep you
apprised of the progress and timeline for your piece.
How much will it cost? Our
pricing starts at about the same as what a highly qualified photographer would charge. We have some of the same
expenses on top of the extra time and materials needed to fabricate truly unique creations.
Our earth-toned frescos have a set pricing because they have a more uniform style and process, but other styles can
vary widely. If you choose another style, we will discuss with you the costs involved during our consultation and
proofing process, and proceed with your approval.
What is the process used to create the
unusually shaped frescoes & what are they made of? Our “fresco” concept took over three years of
research, development and testing to our reach our quality standards!
The frescoes are made on a cellulous-based substrate that has been used in the construction trade. It is fire
retardant and even though it looks like thick plaster or drywall it is very lightweight, so it is easy to hang on
any wall.
First, the substrate is coated with a thin layer of plaster. The image is processed and printed on an archival art
paper, sealed, “antiqued”, and glazed. The print is adhered to the substrate with archival adhesives and the
substrate is also glazed, shaped and sealed on the edges. The print is further enhanced with watercolor and/or
pastels, is sealed several times during the process and finished with a final coat of sealant/preservative. The
back of the piece is covered with a fabric backing and hanging hardware is attached.
How long with my artwork
last? We use only archival, colorfast pigments, papers, and sealers that have been rated by the
manufacturer to last at least 25 to 50 years or more. All the manufactures of our supplies caution that fine art
should not be placed in direct sunlight or placed in high humidity situations. Our frescos cannot be hung
outdoors!
We do make sure that any unique added embellishments are tested for acidity and sealed with archival sealants, but
often we have no way of knowing how an unusual combination of materials will affect their longevity. If fading or
discoloration occurs, we will make every effort to repair or replace the affected area.
What if I don’t already have a photo - can
you take one?
Absolutely! One of our team members, Tim Gillespie, is a highly qualified, experienced photographer! The advantage
of having a photo taken with the art in mind is that it will be tailored to the project. This can cut down on the
editing and manipulation necessary and result in a much finer product.
Do you have other styles? I don’t see
exactly what I want.
We are constantly developing new styles and love the opportunity for new challenges! We have lots of great ideas
that we haven’t had the time or opportunity to try yet! Together we can create something truly unique just for
you!
